We teach our students the tools to understand the existing problems related to the storage of renewable energies and set them up to be able to improve or create new ways to convert and store renewable energy. We look both at state of the art and new technologies, and the energy systems as a whole. For instance photovoltaic cells, windturbines or batteries and their underlying mechanisms are studied. Questions we ask ourselves are for instance: how can the process be improved? Can we use a catalyst to improve the reaction? What happens at the interfaces?

What makes the program special is taking into account not only the technical but also the socio-economic factors like ethics, sustainability and the energy markets. We pave ways for a circular economy to be implemented and processes in each type of industry to be optimized and made sustainable.

FAQs

Applicants are required to have an above average Bachelor’s degree (B.Sc.) in a similar study program: Chemical/or Chemical and Biological Engineering, Energy Technology etc. Applicants are expected to have followed courses in engineering, process engineering and chemical engineering as well as basics in the sciences.

Applicants in their last semester or applicants who have not yet received their official diploma can apply for the CEP program under the condition that they have at least 140 ECTS credited in their current transcript of records. FAU is aware that degree certificates in some countries might take longer to be issued. In this case it is sufficient to provide a document by your university as proof that you either have completed your studies or that you are still studying, including the estimated end of study, the current number of credit points and current average grade. If a provisional certificate has been issued, this document must be submitted.

The university entrance qualification is the document(s) allowing you to enter university in your home country. If you have to pass a university entrance exam in your home country please submit this document also.

  • A program with preselection means that the process of sifting the applications is done by the admission committee of the respective degree prior to admission.
  • The selection process is based on among others academic prerequisites, an electronic test as well as a selection interview.
  • Only after successful preselection, your documents are checked by the admission’s office with regard to the formal requirements. If the checking of your documents leads to a positive result you will officially be admitted into the program.

Your application documents can be in either German or in English. The curriculum vitae and the motivation letter must be in English.

The application letter serves to lay out your suitability and specific motivation for studying the CEP program. Applicants from other disciplines should explain the change in direction. Applicants who are away from university and/or come from industry should lay out the reasons for returning to university and what they have done in between. Gaps in the CV need to be explained in the application letter. Please make sure to be clear and concise – a good application letter should be no longer than one page!

Please do not send your documents via post until you are requested to do so by the CEP Coordination office or the FAU admission office.

The applications are checked subsequently. There is no exact date or time line.
Once the Admission Commission has assessed your application, and you registered and conducted the electronic test, we will inform you on the decision.

There are no tuition fees at FAU (why are there no tuition fees? Find out!).
There is a semester fee of 72,00 EURO at the moment for all students.

You can find the related information on FAU’s webpage on financing your studies.

The department of Chemical and Biological Engineering and the researchers at the Helmholtz Institute for Renewable Energy (HI-ERN) have many industrial contacts, which can be used by CEP students.

In CEP the exams are written or oral exams, student presentations as well as laboratory protocols and a Master’s thesis. Oral exams are the most common sort of exams. They serve to display your in-depth knowledge of a subject and require students to apply knowledge to other contexts (transfer of knowledge). All grades that you achieve during the program are part of the final grade. Some grades are weighed more than others.

Students of CEP can conduct the mandatory internship either in industry or in academia. The professors and teaching staff at the department of Chemical and Biological Engineering have many industrial or research contacts which can be used by the students.
